Soldering through holes is one of the most common tasks in electronics engineering. We’ve put together a step by step tutorial to help you master this skill!
It allows us to connect components that would otherwise be hard to reach. We’ll show you 5 tips for through-hole soldering.
CLEANING THE WORK AREA
Before starting any soldering project, make sure to clean up your work area. This includes cleaning off your bench with alcohol wipes, removing any debris from the surface, and making sure there’s no dust anywhere near your soldering iron.
Solder fumes are very toxic, so be careful where you put them. If you’re working on a project that requires a lot of heat, such as soldering wires onto a circuit board, use a fan to blow away the fumes. Also, if you’re using a torch, keep it at least 10 feet away from anything flammable. This point is very important.
Solder fumes are very toxic, which means you should always wear protective gear while soldering.
The most important piece of equipment is a respirator mask. You’ll want one that fits tightly around your face, and has a filter that allows air to flow freely into your lungs.
A second option is a welding hood, which covers your head and neck. These masks are usually worn under a welding helmet, but you can also buy a separate welding hood.
Finally, you’ll want to wear gloves. When you’re soldering, you’ll be handling hot metal, which can burn your skin. Gloves protect against burns and cuts.
Before you solder anything, take the time to prepare your work area. Make sure all surfaces are clean and free of dust or other contaminants. Also make sure you have enough space, these jobs will definitely help you later.
The above is what to pay attention to, to help you get started.

PREPARING THE COMPONENTS
Once you’re ready to start soldering, remove the component leads from the board. You’ll need to do this before you solder anything because once you solder something onto the board, it will prevent you from easily taking it apart later.
The first step is to prepare the components. Remove the component leads from the circuit board. If you’ve already attached the components to the board, be sure to take them off carefully. Otherwise, use tweezers to gently pull the component lead away from the board.
Next, remove the component leads from the wire. Use pliers to cut the wires at the end where the component lead attaches. You’ll want to leave enough length so that you can attach the component leads back onto the wire later.
Now that the component leads are removed, you can solder the component directly onto the board. The easiest way to do this is to use a hot air gun. Hot air guns heat up the surface of the board, which makes it easier to melt the solder.
When using a hot air gun, keep the nozzle pointed straight down toward the board. Hold the nozzle close to the board, and move it around until the entire area has been heated. Next, place the tip of the nozzle against the component lead and prise it off with your fingers.

SOLDER PASTE
Next, apply some solder paste to the pads using a stencil. This is the first layer of solder that will hold everything together when you solder the wires to the board.
The next step is to use a soldering iron to heat up the solder paste. You want to heat the solder paste until it melts, which should take around 30 seconds. Once the solder paste has melted, remove the stencil from the board and place the wire onto the pad. When you touch the tip of the soldering iron to the solder paste, it will melt and flow into the holes.
After heating the solder paste, you must then apply the solder to the pads. To do this, hold the soldering iron at a 45 degree angle and gently push the tip of the soldered iron into the solder paste. Make sure to keep the soldering iron moving back and forth while applying pressure. If you stop pushing too soon, the solder won’t be able to fill the hole completely.
The first step in soldering is to heat the solder paste. You can use either a propane torch or a hot plate to melt the solder. Once the solder has melted, you should let it cool slightly before adding the solder to the pad. When using a hot plate, place the soldering iron directly onto the surface of the hotplate and turn it on. Wait until the solder begins to melt, then add the solder to the pad and move the soldering iron around the pad.

The last step is to clean off the excess solder. Use a wet sponge to wipe away the excess solder. After cleaning, you’ll notice that there’s still a little bit of solder left on the board. Don’t worry; this is normal.
The best thing about soldering is that it’s easy to get started. There are many different types of solders available, and each one has its own advantages.
For example, if you’re working with a lot of components, you might want to try lead free solder. Lead free solder is less likely to cause problems with children who play with electronics. However, lead free solder isn’t recommended for beginners because it requires special equipment.
SOLDER WIRE
Once you have applied the solder paste, use a soldering iron to heat up the pad. You should see the solder melt and flow into the hole. If not, try heating the tip again.
The first step in soldering is applying the solder paste to the pads. To apply the solder paste, place a piece of masking tape over the area where you want to put solder. Next, take a toothpick and spread the solder paste onto the surface of the pad. After spreading the solder paste, remove the tape from the pad.
The next step is to heat up the pad using a soldering iron. Heat the tip of the soldering iron until it glows red hot. When the tip starts glowing, touch it to the pad. As soon as the solder melts, immediately move the tip away from the pad.
Once the solder has melted, use tweezers to remove the wire from the spool. If you want to be extra careful, you can use a pair of pliers to pull the wire off the spool.
The best way to remove the wire from a spool is to use tweezers. You can also use a pair of plier if you prefer. To melt the solder, heat it using a soldering iron. When the solder begins to melt, use tweezers or a pair of pliers (depending on what tool you choose) to carefully remove the wire from the solder.
The best way to remove the solder from the spool is to use a pair of tweezers. You could also use a pair of scissors to cut the wire off the spools. However, this method is dangerous because you could accidentally cut yourself while cutting the wire.

SOLDERING
The first step to soldering is to prepare your work area. You’ll want to use a clean surface free from dust and debris. Next, you’ll need to heat up your iron.
If you’re using a gas stovetop, turn off the flame under the pan and place the iron on top of the burner. Wait until the temperature has dropped below 400 degrees Fahrenheit before placing the iron on the solder. Once the iron is hot enough, apply a thin layer of solder to the tip of the iron.
Place the iron onto the joint where you want to attach the wire. When the solder melts, remove the iron and let the solder cool completely. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all the joints are done.
To avoid damaging your circuit board, be sure to keep your fingers away from the heating element while applying solder. Also, if you’re working on a project that requires multiple connections, try to space them apart so that you won’t accidentally melt one connection while trying to solder another.
The best way to apply solder is to use a soldering iron and flux pen. Flux pens contain rosin, which helps prevent oxidation and keeps the solder from sticking to the iron.
Once you’ve applied the solder, heat the tip of the iron until it’s red hot, then touch the tip to the joint where you want to connect the wires. After a few seconds, remove the iron and let the solder cool. If you’re using a multimeter, you’ll know when the solder has cooled because the needle will stop moving.
