Via Hole Technology
This is the most common type of via-hole. Pick up the PCB and point it to the light. You can see that the bright hole is the via hole.
This is also the simplest type of hole because when making it, you only need to use a drill or laser to directly drill the entire circuit board, and the cost is relatively cheap.
However, some circuit layers do not need to connect these vias. Although through-holes are cheap, they sometimes use up more PCB space.
There Are Also Two Types of via Hole: Plating via Hole and Non-plating via Hole.
Plated via Hole
After drilling the holes, the board is plated with a thin layer of copper on the walls of the holes, providing conductivity.
Links between component leads and copper traces have lower resistance and better mechanical stability after PCB assembly fabrication.
Non-plated via Holes
This type of via hole is not copper plated, so the ferrule for an unplated via hole has no electrical properties.
They were very popular when printed circuits had copper traces printed on only one side, but their use decreased as the number of layers in the PCB increased.

The Difference between Via Hole and SMT
When the PCB is fabricated using the through-hole mounting method, holes must be drilled in the exposed BCB so that the leads can pass through the holes. This is the original technology used to develop PCBs, which for many years has been considered the most efficient and effective method.
Advantage
One of the biggest advantages of through-hole mounting is that it provides a strong mechanical connection compared to other technologies. Although surface mount technology has largely replaced through-hole mounting, the latter best enables engineers and manufacturers to handle parts that will be mechanically stressed due to this mechanical bond. For example, connectors or heavy components such as transformers are often better suited for through-hole mounting.

Shortcoming
Despite its advantages, vias are still considered a secondary operation in modern assembly facilities. Why? It’s more expensive and complicated. Drilling holes on a bare board is time-consuming, which adds to the cost. In addition to these problems, this type of PCB production greatly limits the available routing area on a multilayer board. This is because drilling needs to go through all PCB layers. Finally, through-holes require the use of hand soldering techniques, which are generally much less reliable and repeatable than the reflow ovens used in surface mount technology.
Surface Mount Technology
Surface mount technology has caused a stir in the PCB assembly world by enabling PCB components to be mounted directly to the surface of the PCB.
