Confused about SMT and SMD soldering for your electronic project? but which type of soldering – SMT or SMD – works best? We break it down for you in this helpful guide.
Features of SMD
- No lead;
- very small;
- Surface assembly;
SMD is hand soldered. Then the pick and place machine can only handle a few simple components. More complex and smaller components still require manual placement.
Features of SMT

- The main body and the solder joint are on the same side of the PCB;
- The component has no leads or only short leads;
SMT components are typically smaller than their through-hole counterparts because it either has smaller leads or no leads at all. There may be various styles of short pins or leads, flat contacts, solder ball (BGA) matrices, or terminations on the component body.
In short, SMT is a surface mount technology, which means that components are attached to the PCB for soldering by means of patch.
The components soldered on the PCB with SMT are SMD.
