Qualcomm on Thursday officially announced the Snapdragon Satellite Project, which will cooperate with satellite communication company Iridium Satellite to provide satellite-based text messaging services on high-end smartphones running Google’s Android operating system.
It is reported that Apple also introduced a similar feature a few months ago, allowing the iPhone 14 to send emergency messages via satellite in countries such as the United States and Canada. Qualcomm’s feature is similar to Apple’s “Emergency SOS”.
Qualcomm demonstrated the solution at the CES 2023 Consumer Electronics Show, centered on a device powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform (processor), which supports emergency two-way messaging, SMS texts, and various other types of messaging .
In addition, it can not only support smartphones, but also devices and application scenarios such as laptops, tablets, vehicles and the Internet of Things, and downstream and terminal partners will be free to develop and customize.
It is reported that smartphones equipped with this technology will be launched in the second half of 2023 along with a series of new models. Android phones with the feature still require a clear view of the sky to work properly, though, and can send messages within 10 seconds on a stable connection.
