How to Choose Components in PCB Design

How Are Components Selected?

Minimize the use of sockets as inductance is introduced. Some components have different packages. One type of component may support shorter circuit trace lengths than another.

The choice of components and the size of the PCB are interrelated. Therefore, the PCB footprint must be considered when choosing the right components for either a rigid or flexible PCB.

Component package shape should prioritize heat dissipation. The best way to dissipate heat is to place the power pads directly below the IC package that is connected to the internal plane. Even the smallest change in pad shape can tighten the routing and reduce connection length.

How to Accommodate Your Components in PCB Size?

Please start by drawing a basic PCB outline and drawing all components on the PCB. Make sure to use the actual or scaled size of the component or board to get a clear idea of the size and type of components that can be used. Some software even lets you view 3-D layouts.

Some parts may encounter height restrictions. Component height needs to be considered when selecting components.

The manufacturing process should be considered first when selecting components and designing the footprint. The best welding process should be considered.

Components will have to be selected according to the fixation process.

If there is no suitable prototype, the size can be customized.

Other Considerations

Other assembly details to keep in mind during the design phase include heating and cleaning. Make sure you know the maximum heat level for your components, whether they can be cleaned, and the type of assembly required. If hand soldering is to be done, the board design must include space for soldering tools.

Make sure your capacitors are all facing the same direction. This saves pick and place machine time during component placement.

Watch out for hot parts. The space around these components must be carefully inspected. Make sure the heat does not negatively affect any components or traces around them.
