How to Prepare 1 BOM for PCB Assembly?

What Is a BOM?

When people go to the store to get the ingredients they need and any tools they’re missing, they’re likely to carry a list with them that tells them what to buy and how much the product needs to buy.

People may even include more detailed items on the list along with where to buy and other details, especially if they send someone else to get them.

Imagine, though, that customers tell them they want products through that detailed shopping list. The list also includes information on how to use other ingredients to make them compatible. This list is similar in many ways to a bill of materials or BOM. It can be understood as making a piece of hardware, such as a printed circuit board.

How to prepare BOM for PCB Assembly?

A BOM is a comprehensive list of raw materials, components and sub-assemblies, components, and other key items for product manufacturing. Manufacturers must rely on the information contained in their BOM to build their products, so it must be highly accurate and detailed enough to help us understand the performance and functionality of most electronic devices.
So, the design process is very important. Customers use the BOM to explain to the manufacturer exactly what they need when ordering a board. Manufacturers use it to build circuit boards to customers’ specifications.

BOM is an important document for PCB assembly. A well-created BOM allows you to see exact quantities, raw materials, components and sub-assemblies, and a comprehensive list of other key items for product manufacturing.

A More Core List

NOTE: Each part type on a printed circuit board needs to have a unique identifier or part number, listed as a note in the bill of materials.

Description: This is the basic description of the part.

Codename: Each individual component on the board has its own unique reference code.

Footprint: This is the name of the physical CAD footprint used by the part.

What should the BOM include?

A BOM is considered an inventory control document that describes all the parts that go into a product. In some cases, it can also help manufacturers manage their suppliers by detailing what is needed to create a product.

The information contained in a PCB Assembly BOM can vary from project to project, but here are some of the common categories.

Part Number: To determine the exact part required for the PCB, list the manufacturer’s part number on the BOM. Each part number is unique, so don’t worry about making mistakes.

Manufacturer Name:If you are looking for a specific brand, you should include the manufacturer’s name. Avoid the extra cost and time of finding replacement parts during production.

Reference numbers: Reference numbers are important and indicate details about component placement.

Description: It is also useful to list the details of each part in the BOM, such as size, voltage, color, and other specifications. These details will help ensure the correct parts are ordered and are helpful for PCB assembly. Also, make sure to list the correct unit of measure in each description. Centimeters, ounces, ohms, or other units. For projects with multiple possible units, keep your selections consistent throughout the document.

Quantity: The number of parts to be produced should be estimated specifically for each PCB assembly. Up-to-date information can help you get discounts when you increase your numbers.

Spare Parts: It is important to list potential spare parts in the BOM. This can help when you run into problems.

Procurement Type: Listing the procurement type in your BOM spreadsheet also helps ensure you get the correct parts. . For example, is it in stock or needs to be customized? Timely and clearly marked.

Keep it updated: BOMs are revised frequently, but different versions make changes difficult. Someone might open an email with a BOM, but it might not be the latest version. This wastes time and leads to misunderstandings. Need to keep up-to-date BOM for notification.
