CAD File
One of the most important elements in modern manufacturing is the computer-aided design (CAD) file, which outlines the details of each component. CAD files are an integral part of the design and manufacturing process, providing machinists with vital information about product materials, dimensions and volumes.
From a manufacturing perspective, CAD files have completely changed the way manufacturers incorporate customer-generated designs into their processes. Here are three things manufacturers and assemblers need in their CAD files to provide the best results.
What Is a 3D CAD File?
A 3D CAD file is a computer-generated 3D drawing of a product that includes all dimensional information about the product. These files are created using a CAD-specific software program and contain all data about product dimensions, geometry and mathematical volumes, etc. Part of the goal of CAD files is to help manufacturers visualize designs by providing interactive digital renderings that can be rotated and viewed from multiple angles.
In addition, 3D CAD files contain raw data used in the manufacturing process to generate programs that are read by computer numerical control (CNC) equipment. Essentially, the raw data in the CAD file is converted into “G-code” that communicates with the manufacturing software. The information in the “G-Code” tells CNC equipment exactly how to cut and shape the components used in each product.
What Is a 2D CAD File?
As the name suggests, a 2D CAD file is a two-dimensional drawing of a component. Like 3D CAD files, 2D CAD files contain dimensional details, as well as details about product materials, finishes, and surfaces. These files are used to obtain a general overview of the components prior to the manufacturing process. Since 2D files do not contain raw data, they cannot be used to provide G-code during CNC machining.
How to Prepare for Manufacturing
If you’re sending CAD renderings to manufacturers of custom components, take the time to ensure your files meet individual manufacturer requirements and industry standards. Following some basic guidelines up front will save time and money in the long run.

Use High-Quality CAD Files
CAD files are created using various programs and software suites. While this offers designers many options, converting data between CAD suites can jeopardize the quality of data shared with manufacturers. Loss of data fidelity occurs when files are shared between CAD suites and can lead to difficulties in the manufacturing process. Make sure you are using high quality CAD files as this will save you a lot of stress and labor in the future.
Select a Compatible CAD File
It won’t be very helpful if the high-quality CAD file is not compatible with the manufacturer’s system. Native CAD files are generated by various programs including: PTC Creo, Siemens NX, CATIA, SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor. AutoCAD (the file format for Autodesk AutoCAD) is the most popular and used CAD program. Some designers prefer to use neutral CAD files (eg STL files, STEP files, IGES files) which are highly compatible between systems but lose some data contained in more complex programs.
Complete CAD Package Available
Often, it is wise to provide 3D and 2D CAD files to manufacturers so they have a complete picture of the components you need. 3D files are used to generate G-code and provide dimensional data to manufacturers. 2D CAD files provide information about measurements and finishes not included in 3D files. These files should highlight the most important views of the part, including section views (if applicable), detailed dimensions and locations of threads, and outline dimensions.
